IP Ratings

Many of our adaptor cables, extension leads, and power distribution units have something called an IP Rating.

IP stands for ingress protection.

These ratings grade the level of ingress protection the electrical lead or appliance enclosure has against the effects of small physical objects or dust particles, and the effects of water or other liquids. Both of which could cause damage to the appliance or prevent it from working properly.

IP ratings comprise of two numbers, the first being the protection level against objects, the second numeral indicates protection against water or liquid ingress. Please see the table below for details of each numerical rating. Most of our outdoor extension leads and power distros will be rated either IP44 (splashproof) or IP67 (waterproof).

IP Ratings Explained

 1st Digit (Solid Objects/Dust) 2nd Digit (Liquids/Water)
0 = No protection 0 = No protection
1 = Protected against solid objects > 50mm 1 = Protected against vertically falling water drops
2 = Protection against solid objects > 12.5mm 2 = Protected against vertically falling water drops when enclosure tilted up to 15°
3 = Protection against solid objects > 2.5mm 3 = Protection against spraying water
4 = Protection against solid objects > 1mm 4 = Protected against splashing water
5 = Dust-protected 5 = Protected against water jets
6 = Dust-tight 6 = Protected against powerful water jets
7 = Protected against the effects of temporary immersion in water
8 = Protected against the effects of continuous immersion in water
9 = Protection against high pressure and temperature water jets
